What pulled more iGaming demand than Spain's World Cup win

Blask daily data shows how closely Spain’s iGaming demand follows football — and how that pattern broke in 2026.

In Spain, football sets the rhythm of iGaming demand. Weekends are the peaks, and the weekdays that spike are usually big European match days. In 2024, the day with the highest demand was the EURO final, when Spain beat England.

Two years later, Spain won a bigger prize — the 2026 World Cup. By demand, though, the day of the final was only the third-biggest day of the year so far. Two dates in February had already drawn more user interest, and one of them was not even a weekend or public holiday.

A calendar built around football

iGaming demand follows a familiar weekly rhythm in most markets: user interest tends to rise on weekends. People have more free time for entertainment, while many of the biggest sporting events are also concentrated on Saturdays and Sundays.

Spain follows this pattern, with football as a clear anchor. According to Blask data, the highest-demand day of every year from 2020 through 2025 fell on a Saturday or Sunday. The strongest weekday ranked only 46th among all days in 2020 and 45th in 2021. It moved up to 15th in 2022, 17th in both 2023 and 2024, and as high as fourth in 2025. In each of those years, the strongest weekday coincided with a UEFA club competition matchday involving Spanish teams.

For example, in 2025, the weekday with the highest Blask Index was Wednesday, 29 January, when all 18 matches of the final Champions League league-phase round were played simultaneously. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Girona were all in action.

In 2024, the strongest weekday came on Tuesday, 10 December, another Champions League night, with Real Madrid and Girona playing. But the highest-demand day came with an even bigger football event. On Sunday, 14 July, Spain beat England in the EURO 2024 final.

In 2026, Spain’s national team won a World Cup, but demand for iGaming did not fully follow.

Spain's break from the pattern

The day of Spain’s triumph in the FIFA World Cup accounts for only the third result by Blask Index in 2026 so far (as of 20 September). 19 July was surpassed by 14 February and 20 February.

2026 Valentine’s Day recorded Blask Index 17.4% higher than the day of the World Cup final. The holiday Saturday, accompanied by widespread promotions from iGaming operators, landed on a football weekend. That happened for the first time since 2021, when 14 February, Sunday, showed strong iGaming demand and finished as the #8 day of the whole year.

Remarkably, Valentine’s Day in 2021 produced a higher Blask Index than any day during EURO 2020, which was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually took place from 11 June to 11 July 2021. 14 February recorded a 3.7% higher Blask Index than the peak day of the tournament — 13 June.

The second-highest daily Blask Index in 2026 was recorded on 20 February. It surpassed the day of the World Cup final by only 0.8%. Surprisingly, it was a regular Friday.

The spike was almost entirely brand-driven. The market leader by user interest, Bet365, accounted for 82.6% of the increase in Spain’s total Blask Index on that day, as its own demand jumped almost fivefold. The same evening, Bet365 suffered a major outage affecting users in Spain, likely driving people to search for the brand while its app and website were unavailable.

The other two weekdays in the top 10 by Blask Index in 2026 are 17 and 18 March. Those were the second-leg matchdays of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, when all three Spanish representatives advanced to the next stage of the tournament.

Bottom line

In Spain, the year's biggest iGaming day usually falls on a football weekend — from 2020 to 2025, even the standout weekdays were Champions League nights with Spanish clubs. Big national-team matches at major tournaments spike demand too — in 2024, the EURO final was the biggest day of the whole year. But in 2026, unlike 2024, Spain's World Cup win came only third.
