October surprise: Royal Decree 813/2026 - New AML obligations for the Spanish iGaming sector
Only a few days ago, the Spanish government published Royal Decree 813/2026 in the Official Gazette (BOE). This Royal Decree imposes major additional AML burdens on Spanish iGaming operators.
The Royal Decree will already enter into force in two weeks’ time – on October 28, 2026.
From then on:
Licensed operators cannot register new players without first verifying that the holder of the payment account is the same individual as the holder of the gambling account.
Existing players can continue to gamble, but no withdrawals can take place without the verification mentioned above has been completed.
Moreover:
If the operator has not been able to verify a match between payment account and gambling account by the end of the transition period (which ends on 28/04/2027), the player account must be closed, the balance returned, and the account reported to the DGOJ.
This means that operators must start adapting NOW to ensure that they are as ready as possible for the changes that are coming before the end of this month.
